4 Skills You’ll Need to Successfully Work in a Remote Environment

The pandemic introduced a new way of working to a lot of people. Some were already working remote prior to Covid, however for most this is a different way of conducting business. No matter if you work for someone else or if you own your own business, you must obtain a certain mindset and possess certain skills for this to work for you.

Below are 4 essential skills you’ll need to work in a remote environment:

• Time management – The idea of working remote can be great; however, time management is critical. Working remote will lead to consistently extending your day beyond eight-hours if you do not take time to forecast your week. Yes, you will have some extended workdays, however this will not happen often, if you plan accordingly. Planning will happen organically if you know what needs to be done and when. Manage your time and tasks in hour blocks. You should know what you are going to do each day and when. The goal is to build a work roadmap that will help you navigate your day. Cross tasks off as you complete them. This will motivate you and show progress and completion. Remember to include lunch. Get up and walk away from your remote office space. Avoid eating lunch at your desk. Doing this will give you the needed break.

• Communication – Oral and written communication are vital in a remote setting. You will find yourself spending more time typing email messages and chats, however having the ability to communication orally is also a critical component. Working remotely means you will attend more video meetings than ever before. This gives you a chance to work and interact with others and not solely relying on email. Not to mention, all matters cannot be discussed and/or resolved via email. Meeting via video can be more productive as it gives you a chance to talk through various projects, issues, or concerns, while interacting (face to face) with peers and others. Oral communication also gives you a chance to better assess your colleagues body language and emotions.

• Adaptability – The new normal the world is currently experiencing has forced many to think and navigate outside the box. This way of working is new for many organizations, so many are still trying to figure it out. Being flexible and having the ability to willingly pivot is vital for a remote environment. This will mean collaborating with others, learning new systems, etc. Working remote can be a moving target, however its best to be open-minded. Doing this will give you an opportunity to build positive relationships.

• Self-motivation – Discipline, tenacity and self-motivation are necessary for remote work. You must take initiative, be proactive and not sit and wait to be micromanaged. Of course, working remotely brings its fair share of distractions, however it’s up to you to avoid distractions. Remove the distractions and learn to plan your day accordingly. Know what needs to get done and just do it. Working remote is KING so don’t do anything to jeopardize that.

Working remotely is a new way of getting the job done, however you can make it work for you if you take the necessary steps to do so. The sky is the limit if you are willing to think outside the box, learn the art of time management and effective communication. For the first time, remote opportunities are plentiful. Remote work is not going anywhere any time soon. So, get ready, get set, let’s make it happen!
